Verdant Courtyard
Silver Lake, CA
The Project
A courtyard that trades pavement for still water.
This Silver Lake courtyard was the space everyone walked through and no one stayed in. We anchored it with a stone water garden — water lilies, hyacinth, and papyrus breaking the surface — set close enough to the banquette that guests read the water before they read the room.
Around the basin, the planting stays low and loose so the light keeps moving: flowering understory against the fence line, softness at every hard edge. Water changes the acoustics of a courtyard the way rugs change a room — conversations settle, and the street disappears.
The garden is maintained on our care program, with seasonal recomposition keeping the surface in bloom through the warm months.
